A boy rides through a quiet frozen forest in search of a home in Apple TV Plus’ animated short film, The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse, based on the internationally best-selling book of the same name by Charlie Mackesy.

“What do you dream about?” asks the mole.

“Home,” says the boy.

“What’s that like?” asks the mole.

“I don’t know but I know I need one,” responds the boy. And so their search begins.

As the title suggests, the boy (newcomer Jude Coward Nicoll) is accompanied on his quest by a mole (Tom Hollander, The White Lotus), a fox (Idris Alba, Luther) and a horse (Gabriel Byrne, All Things Bright and Beautiful).

The film is produced by Academy-Award nominee Cara Speller (Pear Cider and Cigarettes) of NoneMore Productions and J.J. Abrams and Hannah Minghella of Bad Robot Productions. It’s directed by Peter Baynton (The Tiger Who Came to Tea) and Mackesy, and adapted from the original book in collaboration with Jon Croker (Paddington 2). Apple’s former head of design Jony Ive and Academy-Award nominee Woody Harrelson (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) executive produce. The original score is by composer Isobel Waller-Bridge (sister of Phoebe), performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra and conducted by Geoff Alexander.

The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse is presented in partnership with the BBC and it will premiere on the BBC in the UK and start streaming globally on Apple TV Plus outside the UK on Christmas Day.
