Working closely with director Zack Snyder, yU+Co’s promotional piece for Justice League takes the film’s idea of “Motherboxes’’ and uses them as a canvas to explore the history of the titular team’s six core superheroes—Batman (Ben Affleck), the Flash (Ezra Miller), Superman (Henry Cavill), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher).
The Los Angeles-based agency sculpted classical reliefs in 3D animation containing each character’s own religious and mythic iconography. Effects such as rain, snow, caustics and embers provided an added layer of atmosphere for each scene.
The sequence is set to Tom Waits’ “Time,’’ bringing further meaning and emotion to the piece as viewers are taken on a journey through a shifting landscape filled with easter eggs and symbolism. The journey ends with the Motherboxes fusing together in unity, exploding outward to reveal the title.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League, which is the long-awaited and discussed director’s cut of the DC film, debuts March 18 on HBO Max, although a portion of the movie accidentally leaked early to some subscribers.
