Created by Tesfaye along with Euphoria creator Sam Levinson and Reza Fahim, the series is set in Los Angeles’ pop-music scene, following the story of a pop star (Depp) and the club owner (Tesfaye) with whom she falls into a romance. Little does she know, however, that he’s actually the leader of a secret cult and that their simple relationship is going to evolve into something far more complicated.

Besides Depp and Tesfaye, The Idol also stars Suzanna Son, Troye Sivan, Moses Sumney, Jane Adams, Dan Levy, Jennie Ruby Jane, Eli Roth, Rachel Sennot, Hari Nef, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Mike Dean, Ramsey and Hank Azaria.

Joe Epstein is showrunner and writer on the series. Levinson, Tesfaye, Fahim, Epstein, Ashley Levinson, Kevin Turen and Bron Studios’ Aaron L. Gilbert executive produce. Mary Laws, who has written on Succession and Preacher, writes and co-exec produces. The Weeknd’s manager Wassim “Sal” Slaiby and creative director La Mar C. Taylor also co-executive produce.

No premiere date has yet been set for The Idol, which will stream on HBO Max, although The Weeknd aired the teaser before his Las Vegas show on Saturday night.
