Thursday, Aug. 6 marks the end of Jon Stewart’s run on The Daily Show, a 16-year hosting gig that has changed the face of televised satire and has upgraded Comedy Central to a force to be reckoned with.
Stewart will say his goodbyes Thursday night, with fellow comedians and friends Amy Schumer, Louis CK and Denis Leary. But before he goes, revisit some of his first days on the show and see how Comedy Central promoted him then versus now. (Hint: it, like his comedic sensibility, hasn’t changed much).
In 1998, Stewart attends a wonderfully fake red carpet event for a promo for the new show.
A younger Stewart shows much of the same comedic timing he has today in a “field piece.”
In one of the show’s first promos, Stewart’s old standup comes into play before current events make their mark.
Jump ahead a few years for Comedy Central’s Indecision 2000, where Stewart once again reminds viewers this is a comedy show on the same network as South Park.
Or Indecision 2012 when he and John Oliver provided election analysis purely with sound effects.
And for those fans who want to go way back, remember his very own MTV series, The Jon Stewart Show, in his highlight reel below:
