To promote its web and Twitter project dedicated to this year’s 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution, Russian 24/7 cable network Russia Today (RT) created a series of promos that reflect back on specific moments in time and then asks the question: What if Twitter existed 100 years ago?

Each promo shows a scene from Russian history and reimagines them with a modern twist. In one spot, soldiers head off to war but not before first pulling out a selfie stick and taking a group selfie. In another, Tsar Nicolas II tweets about his angst and despair right after abdicating (and a year and a half before being executed along with his family.

The campaign also looks back at the change from hegemonic rule by an emperor, and the rise of communism under Vladimir Lenin.

To Lenin, total power should be in working-class hands, a theory he presents in a speech now famous as “the April thesis.”

The spots promote the network’s website dedicated to the event, 1917.RT.com, where visitors can learn about the Russian Revolution in English, Spanish or Russian. The campaign also has a Twitter hashtag: #1917LIVE.

For a year starting in late February, RT is looking back on significant moments from this pivotal part of Russian history.

RT is a public broadcaster funded by the Russian government.
