Netflix brings Alex Kershaw’s book, The Liberator: One World War II Soldier’s 500-Day Odyssey, to life in new and gorgeously animated limited series, The Liberator.
The series, based on the true story told in the book, focuses on U.S. Army officer Felix Sparks, who has to leave his infantry unit after being shot in the chest. But instead of accepting relief from duty due to his serious injury, Sparks opts to rejoin his unit.
“My dearest Mary, when I left you to come over here, I was scared of losing you, scared of not coming back, scared of dying,” Sparks reads in a letter to his sweetheart to start the trailer. “But I began this war with a group of men, men who I owed a debt to.”
As the trailer continues, showing Sparks reunited with his surprised men, he says in voiceover: “Mary, I don’t expect you to understand, but it isn’t my time to come home yet. I’m not scared anymore.”
The four-part series was created by Jeb Stuart (Die Hard, The Fugitive). It’s the first ever to be produced in Trioscope Enhanced Hybrid Animation, a new patent-pending technology combining state-of-the-art CGI with live-action performance. Grzegorz Jonkajtys developed the technology together with School of Humans’ L.C. Crowley.
It’s executive produced by Stuart, Bob Shaye and Michael Lynn for Unique Features, and Crowley, Jonkajtys, Brandon Barr and Mark Apen for Triscope Studios. Kershaw co-produces and Jonkajtys directs. Bradley James stars as Captain Sparks.
The series drops in the U.S. on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, on Netflix.
