With movie-going on indefinite hold, Disney’s plan to release animated feature Raya and the Last Dragon on March 12, 2021, feels like something to look forward to.
The film—inspired by Southeast Asian locations such as Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Singapore—stars Kelly Marie Tran (Star Wars: The Last Jedi). Tran voices the young warrior Raya, who, with her pet armadillo TukTuk, is on a quest to find the promised last dragon, Sisu (Awkwafina), in order to restore peace to the fictional realm of Kumandra.
Since work on the movie started during the pandemic, all production, including animation and voiceover work, has been done remotely, said Producer Osnat Schurer during this week’s virtual VIEW visual effects and animation conference.
The movie is directed by Don Hall (Big Hero 6) and Carlos Lopez Estrada from a screenplay by Adele Lim (Crazy Rich Asians).
