ABC, HBO, Netflix, OWN, Starz and WGN America are the networks with shows nominated best drama and best comedy at the 49th annual NAACP Image Awards on TV One on Monday, Jan. 15, 2018, which is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday.
“The NAACP is thrilled for another great collaboration with TV One to create a momentous evening of entertainment culminating a day of volunteer service, citizen action, and celebration on the national holiday honoring the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as well as recognizing this year’s nominees for their hard work, perseverance and achievements in our community,” said Leon W. Russell, chairman of the NAACP National Board of Directors, in a statement.
“As the nation commemorates the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s assassination on April 4, 1968, we are reminded of the ageless principles of non-violence, truth and justice, humility, and service that he taught all Americans.”
Oprah Winfrey’s OWN has two best-drama nominees with Greenleaf and Queen Sugar. Also nominated are NBC’s This Is Us, Starz’ Power and WGN America’s Underground.
In the best comedy category, HBO has two entries with Ballers and Insecure. Also nominated are ABC’s Black-ish, Netflix’s Dear White People and Starz’ Survivor’s Remorse.
Overall, Netflix and OWN lead the TV categories with 23 and 17 nominations, respectively. NAACP also gives awards in movie and music categories.
Nominees for outstanding actor in a drama series are Queen Sugar’s Kofi Siriboe, Marvel’s The Defenders’ Mike Colter, Power’s Omari Hardwick, This Is Us’ Sterling K. Brown, who won the Emmy for this role in September, and Empire’s Terence Howard.
Nominees for best actress in a drama series are Underground’s Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Scandal’s Kerry Washington, Queen Sugar’s Rutina Welsey, Empire’s Taraji P. Henson and How to Get Away With Murder’s Viola Davis, who won the Emmy for this role two years ago.
Outstanding supporting actors in a drama include Empire’s Bryshere Gray, Queen Sugar’s Dondre Whitfield, Scandal’s Joe Morton, Empire’s Jussie Smollett and Empire’s Trai Byers.
Nominated best supporting actresses are Greenleaf’s Lynn Whitfield, Power’s Naturi Naughton, The Handmaid’s Tale’s Samira Wiley, This Is Us’ Susan Kelechi Watson and Queen Sugar’s Tina Lifford.
On the comedy side, Black-ish’s Anthony Anderson, Master of None’s Aziz Ansari, Ballers’ Dwayne Johnson, Friends from College’s Keegan-Michael Key and Survivor’s Remorse’s RonReaco Lee are all nominated best actor in a comedy.
Orange is the New Black’s Danielle Brooks, Insecure’s Issa Rae, The Carmichael Show’s Loretta Devine, Claws’ Niece Nash and Black-ish’s Tracee Ellis Ross are nominated best actress in a comedy.
Nominated supporting actors in a comedy are Grace and Frankie’s Ernie Hudson, Insecure’s Jay Ellis, Ballers’ John David Washington and Omar Miller and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’s Tituss Burgess.
Nominees for best supporting actress in a comedy are Saturday Night Live’s Leslie Jones, Black-ish’s Marsai Martin, Survivor’s Remorse’s Tichina Arnold, Orange is the New Black’s Uzo Aduba, a two-time Emmy winner in this role, and Insecure’s Yvonne Orji.
Finally, nominees for outstanding television movie, limited series or dramatic special are Lifetime’s Flint, Fox’s Shots Fired, HBO’s The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, BET’s The New Edition Story and TV One’s When Love Kills: The Falicia Blakeley Story.
The show is to be hosted by Black-ish’s Anthony Anderson for the fifth consecutive year.
