The History Channel returns to the brutality of the Roman gladiators in eight-part documentary series Colosseum, premiering Sunday, July 17 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

The series looks at the “savage truth of a gladiator’s life as a slave-warrior to the … ways Rome’s Emperors used the vast amphitheater to demonstrate total power,” according to History. Each episode will explore the life of one historic character – combining reenactment with expert commentary – while the series spans the colosseum’s history from its opening day to its closing one.
