In its upcoming two-part docu-series, What’s My Name, HBO chronicles the life of Muhammad Ali, one of the 20th century’s most iconic figures.
The series is executive produced by LeBron James and Maverick Carter through their SpringHill Productions and directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day). It starts with Ali’s rise as a young boxer and follows him through his career as he evolves from athlete to conscientious objector to controversial political figure to global icon.
What’s My Name, the title of which reflects back on Ali’s decision to change his name from Cassius Clay to Muhammad Ali, relies on recordings of Ali’s own voice and archival photos and footage — some of it previously unseen — to paint an intimate portrait.
“Muhammad Ali transcended sports in a way the world had never seen before,” said James in a statement. “It’s an honor to have the opportunity to tell his incredible and important story for the coming generations. He showed us all the courage and conviction it takes to stand up for what you believe in. He changed forever what we expect a champion to be, and I’m grateful that SpringHill gets to be a part of continuing his legacy.”
What’s My Name | Muhammad Ali premieres May 14 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on HBO.
