“Bellevue is a small mining community. Everything seems very nice and glassy on the outside … but it’s actually a lot more sinister under the surface.”

That’s according to WGN America’s first trailer for Bellevue starring True Blood’s Anna Paquin as Annie Ryder, a strong but flawed detective who investigates the small town disappearance of a young teenager.

Paquin, along with other cast members and producers, offer their insight into the psychological thriller in the network’s featurette.

WGN America also revealed key art for the eight-episode series:

Bellevue focuses on the murder of a young woman 20 years ago that traumatized the small town with big secrets. Now, the killer is back … maybe.

When a high school hockey star, who is wrestling with his gender identity, goes missing and all signs point to foul play, Annie must unravel all the pieces before her own life falls apart, according to WGN America. As the case pulls her further away from her family, she’s also confronted by a mysterious person from her past with disturbing answers to lingering questions and a terrifying need to play mind games.

Along the way, Annie must navigate a complicated relationship with her on again, off again ex, Eddie Roe (Allen Leech, Downton Abbey, The Imitation Game) and her boss on the force, Police Chief Peter Welland (Shawn Doyle, House of Cards, Fargo).

Paquin also serves as an executive producer alongside co-creators and showrunners Jane Maggs (The Offering) and Adrienne Mitchell (Bomb Girls, Durham County), and executive producers Janis Lundman, Michael Prupas, Morwyn Brebner and Jesse Prupas.

Bellevue premieres January 23 at 10 p.m.
