Netflix surprised fans at the Cobra Kai: Live & Badass event in Los Angeles last week with a first-look teaser trailer of their favorite show as well as a date announcement: season five will premiere globally on Netflix September 9.

When the new season kicks off, Cobra Kai kingpin Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith) is planning to expand his karate empire across the San Fernando Valley after landing a questionable victory at the 51st Annual All Valley Karate tournament that forced Daniel (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny (William Zabka) out of business.

“Today is a turning point at Cobra Kai,” says Silver in the trailer. “Our competition has closed up shop, and the only thing better than a full dojo is a whole valley of full dojos.”

While Daniel works to stop the expansion – with help from his former rival Chozen (Yuji Okumoto) – Johnny and his son (Robby Tanner Buchanan) travel to Mexico to find Johnny’s student and surrogate son, Miguel (Xolo Maridueña), who doesn’t seem that excited to be found.

Cobra Kai is written and executive produced by Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg via their production company, Counterbalance Entertainment. Will Smith, James Lassiter and Caleeb Pinkett executive produce for Westbrook Entertainment along with Susan Ekins in association with Sony Pictures Television. Macchio and Zabka, stars of The Karate Kid, also executive produce.

Cobra Kai also stars Courtney Henggeler, Tanner Buchanan, Mary Mouser, Jacob Bertrand, Gianni Decenzo, Vanessa Rubio and Peyton List with Dallas Dupree Young, Oona O’Brien and Griffin Santopietro.

The first four seasons are now streaming on Netflix with season five dropping Friday, September 9.
