In celebration of Mother’s Day, FX on Sunday released the first teaser for its upcoming five-part documentary, Dear Mama, which explores the stories of two voices – activist Afeni Shakur and her son, famed hip-hop artist Tupac Shakur, both of whom are now deceased.

The documentary, from Emmy -nominated director Allen Hughes (The Defiant Ones), looks at the mother and son through the eyes of the people who knew them best.

The above teaser pastes Afeni and Tupac’s faces together in a mixed-media collage, with the motion graphics set to Shakur’s hit, “Dear Mama,” off of his 1995 platinum-selling album, Me Against the World.”

Afeni Shakur, born Alice Faye Williams, was a member of the Black Panther Party for a short time as well as an activist. Years after the birth of her two children, she found herself single, unemployed and addicted to crack cocaine, making her relationship with her son, Tupac (born Lesane Parish Crooks), difficult. Tupac left home in 1989 at 18 due to their domestic struggles, but ultimately reconciled with her.

“There’s no way I can pay you back, but the plan is to show you that I understand,” Tupac raps in “Dear Mama.”

Tupac Shakur was a shooting star, becoming famous with the release of his album 2Pacalypse Now in 1991, when he was 20. He went to release three more albums and star in six films before he was gunned down in Las Vegas on September 7, 1996.

Dear Mama premieres on FX on this fall.
