Fans lined up at Comic-Con’s Preview Night Wednesday, July 8, to win a prize from Adult Swim’s giant cat wall, get blood spattered on them, take photos with Miss Piggy or be attacked in GIF form from Doctor Who’s Weeping Angels.
Television is making innovative appearances at Comic-Con, from booths inside the convention center to branding in the Gaslamp District to transportation around San Diego. Inside the convention center, TV fans found their favorite shows and became curious about new ones with GIF booths, photo-sharing opportunities and fun new swag.
USA’s Colony and Fox’s Scream Queens did their part with transportation, branding bikes and trolleys around town.
Comedy Central’s #ComedyCentralCon, even though it’s taking part largely on Friday and Saturday, had a few photo opportunities for fans like its Broad City subway stop.
The Walking Dead once again had a themed booth on the convention center floor for its latest season location/villains, highlighting the Wolves and the trap they set for some of the Walking Dead crew in season five. The zombie hit also had a presence around the Gaslamp District, however, with branding around the Hard Rock Hotel. Its companion series, set to debut soon, also made an appearance outside with “Fear Begins Here” graffiti and missing persons posters.
NBC is working on taking over a corner of the Gaslamp District with a giant center for Heroes Reborn and a restaurant covered in Blindspot branding. The same spot last year was used for Constantine and The Blacklist.
A little further into Gaslamp, Syfy has once again branded an entire restaurant according to its latest space drama. The Expanse Cafe doesn’t just cover the outside with logos. The inside is themed to the show from the menus, to the seating sections (Mars, earth, etc.) to complimentary Expanse companion books and VR gear to explore The Expanse’s spaceship.
ABC’s booth takes advantage of one of the biggest brands to date: The Muppets. On the outside its booth is made to look like a studio set, with behind-the-scenes playing on screens for fans as they wait to go inside and take shareable GIFs with Miss Piggy and Fozzie Bear.
Warner Bros. has a booth all about super. Supergirl soars over it, while Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman flank the other side and its several TV heroes (Arrow, The Flash, etc.) stand by as well.
Cartoon Network and Adult Swim separated inside, with Cartoon Network focusing its booth on promoting We Bare Bears with photo booths with each animal, and Adult Swim offering up prizes from its brightly colored cat booth a few steps away.
MTV’s Scream booth, though it didn’t have the longest line (that is going to ABC for Wednesday night), may be getting the most buzz. Using props and blood spatter, fans can stand with the Scream killer and try their hands at attacking an off-screen victim, with blood spattering them at the last minute, making for one Instagrammable slow-motion video.
