The cast and creators of The Crown dive into the difficult balance of family and power bestowed upon Queen Elizabeth II (Claire Foy) in Netflix’s latest featurette for the upcoming series.

The show tells the story of Elizabeth’s reign as she takes the throne at the age of 25, just after her wedding as the declining British Empire is recovering from war in the second half of the 20th century.

“Becoming queen at such a vulnerable age brings certain responsibilities which then makes the subsequent conducting of a marriage or any family relationships incredibly difficult,” says Creator Peter Morgan.

Actors, producers and executives take viewers behind the scenes of the production, from making sure the costumes are historically accurate, to the show’s aim to provide a glimpse into the privates lives of the royal family.

Based on Morgan’s Tony-winning play The Audience, he delves into the queen’s private life behind her public facade, highlighting her marriage, her forging a relationship with Winston Churchill (John Lithgow), and leading the empire as the political world is in disarray.

“The monarchy and politics are just this vast backdrop to a very intense and very personal story,” Lithgow says.

The Crown also stars Matt Smith as Prince Philip, Victoria Hamilton as the Queen Mother, Jared Harris as King George VI, Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret and Dame Eileen Atkins as Queen Mary.

The series is directed by Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Hours) and producer Andy Harries (The Queen). It debuts November 4 on Netflix.
