Let’s be honest: 2018 was not that great. That’s why we’re ready to brush ourselves off and start 2019 with a new outlook. Here’s a few things we at Daily Brief are anticipating for the year ahead:
1) Let’s get basic for a moment: We join the rest of the world in saying that we cannot wait for season eight of HBO’s Game of Thrones. Our only complaints are that six episodes are nowhere near enough. In addition, we have quite a lot of fear that we are going to hate the ending. But that said, we are still extremely excited. Large Game of Thrones viewing parties are already in the planning process (roast joint of beast, a glass of finest Arbor Red and lemon cakes, anyone?) and our podcast players are ready to queue up all of the fan-based pods that take up all of our free time when original episodes are airing.
We’re so excited that even this trailer that includes an extremely tiny amount of new footage warrants watching and rewatching:
2) One thing that’s already helping us to cope with the coming end of our favorite show is Netflix’s announcement—made on New Year’s Eve—that season three of Stranger Things will premiere on July 4, when we know we’ll still be drowning our sorrows about the end of Game of Thrones. That should distract us for at least the long weekend.
2b) There’s no release date for this yet, but based on our previous enjoyment of the show, first-look images and Olivia Colman’s Golden Globes’ acceptance speech on Sunday night, we are heavily anticipating season three of Netflix’s The Crown, starring Colman (The Favourite) and Tobias Menzies (Game of Thrones, Outlander, The Night Manager) as her husband and royal consort, Prince Philip.
3) But before all of that comes season three of HBO’s True Detective, starring man of the moment Mahershala Ali, who won the Oscar last year and won the Golden Globe for best supporting actor in a drama for Green Book on Sunday night. Ok, we admit season two was not all that — and in fact was quite confusing — but we’ll be back in front of our TVs to see Ali do his elegant and understated—but always powerful—work.

3b) While we’re at it, we’re also pretty stoked for season two of HBO’s Big Little Lies, as Meryl Streep joins the powerhouse cast that includes Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley and Laura Dern.
4) We’re excited about this next choice based solely on the trailer, which first aired during Sunday night’s Golden Globes: FX’s Fosse/Verdon, starring Oscar winners Michelle Williams and Sam Rockwell, looks spectacular. And it’s executive produced by the genius behind Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda. We’ll make room in our largely Game of Thrones-focused viewing schedule for this in April.
