Reflecting similar moves elsewhere in the production business, The Weinstein Company recently announced they would focus more on the TV side, expanding its unscripted ventures while working on more scripted projects.
According to The New York Times, Harvey and Bob Weinstein want to divide the studio equally between film and television in order to “add stability to the company.”
With this goal in mind, the Weinsteins have a few projects already set in motion: “Book of the Dead,” an Egyptian detective series; “10 Commandments,” produced by WGN America; “Marco Polo,” an adventure story for Netflix; “War and Peace,” in which the BBC and The Weinsten Co. reimagine Tolstoy’s story; “Stan and Ollie,” telling the story of Laurel and Hardy’s later years; and a new “Entourage”-inspired series.
The new scripted projects will join a list of reality series the company already has, including “Project Runway” and its upcoming spin-off “Under the Gunn.”

Brief Take: Last week, Sony Pictures similarly said it would cut down on film production to increase profits in TV. Both Sony and The Weinstein Co. will move forward with TV projects with the goal of creating hit series that stay around for years and can be syndicated to many platforms, balancing out the hit-or-miss of film launches.
