Raycom Media-owned WBTV in Charlotte debuted an on-air makeover this week that showcases a new half-hard, half-virtual set.
The CBS-affiliated station tapped FX Design Group for the new design, which WBTV says reflects their newscasts’ reputation for being “warm, inviting, and technologically advanced.”

“The set looks absolutely top-notch, but the immense technology at our fingertips, including the Virtual Studio from Hybrid TV, enhances every opportunity for news and storytelling,” said WBTV News Director Dennis Milligan.
On-air talent have multiple areas to choose from when presenting stories on the new set.

The main backdrop doubles as a standing presentation area, and includes a 4x6 NEC array controlled through TV One’s Master Mini video system.
Reporters can also use an 80” monitor, and the working on-air weather office area is flanked with six large 55” Sharp monitors, and one 46” NEC for traffic reports.
FX Design Group worked with Digital Video Group on the project.
New color-changing LED lights shift to help set the mood for individual stories.
“In all my years in broadcasting, this is the best looking and most functional set I’ve put on to date,” said NIck Simonette, regional group vp/general manager at WBTV.
