Maybe HBO’s Game of Thrones’ prequel, House of the Dragon, isn’t as complicated as it first seems with so many Targaryens named so many similar things.

At its core, House of the Dragon is the story of one royal family and the in-fighting among its members that leads to civil war and the destruction of the power that won them the throne in the first place.

HBO released the show’s first official trailer (above) right before its due to debut at San Diego Comic-Con, complete with a panel at the fan fest’s Hall H and onsite activations.

The show is based on Game of Thrones’ author George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, which takes place some 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and sets the stage for the epic clash between the Targaryens, Starks, Lannisters and Baratheons.

It stars Paddy Considine as King Viserys Targaryen, a kind man who wants to carry forward his grandfather’s legacy but does not know how to contain the struggles and scheming going on all around him; Matt Smith as hot-headed Prince Daemon Targaryen, brother to the king and presumed heir to the throne; Emmy D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, the king’s oldest daughter who feels the throne should, by all rights, be hers even if she is a woman; and Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower, Rhaenyra’s best friend who later catches the eye of the king, creating mistrust and fractions in the family.

The series also stars Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys “the Sea Snake” Velaryon; Eve Best as his wife, Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, who has plans of her own; and Fabien Frankel, Sonoya Mizuno and Rhys Ifans.

House of the Dragon is created and executive produced by Martin, Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik. Condal also showruns and writes, while Sapochnik also showruns and directs. Other EPs are Sara Hess, Joceyln Diaz, Vince Gerardis and Ron Schmidt.

House of the Dragon premieres Sunday, August 21 on HBO.
