Back by popular demand for its second year at PromaxBDA: The Conference, “Videophonic” gives creators a chance to run wild by creating never-before-seen music videos for songs before the MTV era.
Below, discover a few examples of the beautiful and whimsical work on display at this annual session curated by Sean Owolo, executive producer and partner at Big Machine. The only rules for “Videophonic” participants are that the chosen song must come from before 1981, when MTV came along and changed music visuals forever.
Prepare to be surprised by how well new design techniques and old music pair together. Watch the three videos below and tell us which one you like the best! What pre-MTV song would you most like to turn into a video?
“Looking Out My Back Door:”
This video, presented by Roger’s Ariel Costa, is set to Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Lookin’ Out My Back Door.” Using only animation, Roger tells the story of Rip Van Winkle, singing along with tambourines and elephants before cycling on a tightrope and taking a ride on a flying spoon.
