USA Network is tapping into viewers’ fears about the current state of the world in its upcoming series, The Purge, based on Blumhouse Productions’ hit horror-movie franchise.
To acquaint viewers who haven’t seen the movies with the story behind the show, Atlanta-based Primal Screen put together this animated piece that retells the history leading up to the world’s current state of affairs when the show premieres. Each illustration, hand-drawn by Primal Screen’s staff, dispassionately merges depictions of horrifying events with clinical charts and insignia.
The series revolves around a 12-hour period, known as The Purge, when all crime, including murder, is legal. The idea is to give citizens a set period of time in which to exorcize their inner demons, as well as cull the population of the weak and infirm. Set in an altered America ruled by a totalitarian political party, the series follows several seemingly unrelated characters living in a small city. As the clock winds down, each character is forced to come to terms with how far they will go in order to survive.
The Purge debuts Tuesday, Sept. 4, on USA.
