It’s a question tailored for our times: What’s more terrifying—the racist terrors of White America or the Lovecraftian monsters hiding in dark corners?

In Jordan Peele’s latest look at American racism, Lovecraft Country, a trio goes in search of their legacy and ends up finding much more than they expected.

The series, which is based on the 2016 novel by Matt Ruff, follows Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) as he joins up with his friend Letitia (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and his Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) to embark on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father (Michael Kenneth Williams).

Along the way, the trio encounters both racist-driven terrors as well as more fantastical monsters inspired by the horror writings of H.P. Lovecraft.

Lovecraft Country, which premieres on HBO in August, is executive produced by Misha Green (Underground), who also serves as showrunner, along with Peele, J.J. Abrams, Bill Carraro, Yann Demange (who directed episode one), Daniel Sackheim (who directed episodes two and three) and David Knoller (executive producer on episode one).

The series is produced by afemme, Inc., Bad Robot Productions and Monkeypaw Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.
