Over the years, opening sequences have evolved from mere afterthoughts to compelling introductions that not only set a show’s tone, but stand as creative works in their own right.

From establishing an emotional state, to hinting at what’s to come, often changing from season to season, or even week to week, the main titles are an important part of television marketing. Here’s a look at some of the most popular from 2017.

10. Main Titles for Disney Channel’s ‘Andi Mack’

For the series’ main titles, creative agency AV Squad used a combination of live action and 3D modeling to capture the essence of the character and her knack for creating handmade arts and crafts.

9. ‘Jules Unlimited’ Title Sequence

This title sequence makes scientific discovery feel as magical as a fantasy adventure or a fairy tale for Dutch public broadcaster Vara’s reboot of one of its beloved programs.

8. ‘Prison Break’ Main Titles

Picturemill collaborated with show creator Paul Scheuring for an all-new for open Fox’s reboot, which evolved on the iconic themes and format of the first four seasons to appeal to long-time fans, while providing an exciting glimpse into Prison Break for first-time viewers.

7. Main Titles for FX’s ‘Feud: Bette and Joan’

FX and Murphy teamed with frequent collaborator Prologue on main titles that are reminiscent of Saul Bass. Bass, and his wife Elaine, were prevalent main title designers in the era Feud covers. The music was composed by Mac Quayle who in turn was inspired by late composer Bernard Hermann, who was a frequent collaborator with Alfred Hitchcock.

6. Main Titles for Ukrainian Documentary ‘Children of Victory’

Ukraine-based 1+1 Design juxtaposes images of kids at play with the horrors of World War II for this opening sequence for the Ukrainian documentary about six survivors who were children at the time. In the open, each child draws a picture with a piece of chalk that shows something dear that they lost.

One scene flows right into the next in London-based Huge Designs’ main title sequence for AMC’s drama.

4. Imaginary Forces’ Picture-Perfect Main Titles for ‘Anne’

To create the ethereal main titles for Anne, Imaginary Forces reached out to artist Brad Kunkle who painted original pictures to depict nature-loving heroine Anne Shirley (Amybeth McNulty).

3. Main Titles for Fox’s ‘Shots Fired’

Police tape crosses the screen multiple times, reminding the audience of recent stories of police brutality and the Black Lives Matter movement, and then resolves itself into a version of the American flag, in the title sequence created by Los Angeles-based Shine.

2. New Main Titles for HBO’s ‘Real Time with Bill Maher’

Creative agency Buster uses fast-moving iconography to run us quickly through the issues of the day in this new main title sequence. The show kicked off its 15th season on Jan. 20, Inauguration Day, and President Trump was certainly at the top of Maher’s agenda.
