In an effort to encourage cord cutters and “cord nevers” to come back to pay TV, Time Warner Cable is marketing a new “Starter TV with HBO” package, which includes access to HBO along with about 20 broadcast channels.

The cable provider’s new deal includes local channels, C-SPAN, HSN, QVC and ShopNBC.

This comes only weeks after Comcast announced a similar bundle called “Internet Plus,” which is priced between $39.99 - $49.99 (more expensive than Time Warner’s new bundle, which is promoting a special price of $29.99 for the first year). Comcast and Time Warner’s choices could signal a larger trend in creating varying options for TV consumers of all types.

Brief Take: More cable providers are finding ways to keep cord cutters paying for TV. Bundling premium services like HBO, Showtime or Starz, which has programming that’s sometimes hard to get elsewhere, is just one step in the direction of luring back those customers.
