American Horror Story: Freak Show rolled into viewers’ living rooms on Wednesday night, complete with an evil clown- and skeleton-laden opening titles sequence.

Depending on your tolerance for being creeped out, you are probably wondering what cruel genius concocted this freaky sequence.

Turns out the answer is LA-based Prologue.

Prologue’s Director Kyle Cooper gave AdWeek some insight into the credits’ creation. Among the things we learned:

-Stop-motion = Creepy

Cooper and Prologue went the live-action route for the first three installments of AHS, but they felt that live-action circus freaks were just a bit too sad. So they went with stop-motion because they felt that would give everything a much creepier vibe. They were right.

-They’re not trying to spoil the plot

“Everyone thinks there are all these Easter eggs and secret things!” Cooper tells AdWeek. “I’m just trying to be influenced by what the script is. I don’t think we give anything away.”

-They drew a lot of creative inspiration from this guy Joel-Peter Witkin is an American photographer whose work often captures dwarves, transexuals, and physically deformed people.

“He’s a dark guy, but at least he’s earnest in what he feels like making,” Cooper told the magazine.
