More than 20 years into Shark Week, Discovery is still having fun with its annual programming event as demonstrated by the above promo, which first appeared as a cut-down on Twitter and Instagram and then moved on to linear platforms.

This year, viewers will visit New Zealand, Australia and South Africa to hear the latest from some of the world’s foremost shark researchers. Among the topics are how the reduced amount of human activity on the world’s oceans during the pandemic has allowed sharks to thrive.

Discovery also continues to partner with non-profit global organization Oceana to help protect sharks, which are threatened by a global shark fin trade that includes fins from as many as 73 million sharks each year. The fight against this practice is supported by Discovery and other Shark Week partners who are creating content to educate fans about why oceans need sharks in order to function properly. The partners are raising money in support of Oceana’s campaigns, which include advocating for the passage of the Shark Fin Sales Elimination Act of 2019.

Shark Week 2020 will air August 9 through August 16 with more than 20 hours of shark-focused programming throughout the week. Viewers also can follow the #Sharkweek hashtag across Discovery’s social platforms—including TikTok, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram—for tons of shark-themed content. Viewers also can head to sharkpickles.com for all the latest Shark Week news.
