With Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan) now gone from the series, season nine of The Walking Dead focuses on the rise of “The Whisperers,” a new community of humans that lives amongst the dead by wearing their skins.

“They’re a group that’s decided the world belongs to the walkers now,” says Angela Kang, executive producer and showrunner, in AMC’s behind the scenes featurette about what’s to come.

The network also posted a teaser that focuses on the threat the new villians pose to the established group of survivors, and alludes to new cast member Samantha Morton as Alpha, the leader of The Whisperers.

“My mom, you don’t mess with her,” her daughter tells Darryl (Norman Reedus).

In the featurette, cast and crew explore who the The Whisperers are, and how the way they look at the world poses a real threat.

“The psychology behind them is actually some of the most complex we’ve witnessed on the show,” says Danai Gurira, who plays Michonne. “We don’t even understand what their motives are.”

Season nine will also feature more “creepy, ominous, classic horror-type moments,” says Executive Producer Denise Huth.

The Walking Dead returns February 10 on AMC.
