“The Walking Dead” may not seem like the most educational of TV series, but the folks at UC Irvine have taken it upon themselves to educate less-informed zombie followers with an online course called “Society, Science, Survival: Lessons from AMC’s ‘The Walking Dead.’”
The free course will be taught by four UC Irvine professors beginning October 14, one day after the show’s Season 4 premiere, and will cover topics ranging from population dynamics and the spread of disease to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and post-apocalyptic nutrition.
AMC has licensed the show’s content to UC Irvine for the eight-week course, which is made possible by a collaboration with online class platform Instructure. The network even helped to advise on course themes.
“The Walking Dead” also released its ominous Season 4 key art this week (above).

Brief Take: College courses have used TV brands to teach related lessons for years, but AMC takes it one step further by officially licensing “The Walking Dead” content for this dedicated class. At least it’s a MOOC (massive open online course) and not an onsite class—those seats would have filled up pretty quickly.
