The spot, which leans on archival photography and footage, starts with Dr. Jerry Buss’ acquisition of the team in 1979; the arrival of Magic Johnson until the end of his playing career when he’s diagnosed HIV positive; the recruiting of Shaquille O’Neal and his teaming with Kobe Bryant; Bryant’s tragic death in a helicopter accident in February 2020; and LeBron James’ quest to take the team back to its former heights.
The documentary – which premieres Monday, August 15 on Hulu – includes interviews with Johnson; O’Neal; Dr. Buss’ daughter Jeannie, who now plays a big hand in running the $5 billion empire; former coach Phil Jackson (and Buss’ ex-fiance); Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban; and others who have played roles in the team’s storied legacy. It’s directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) and comes on the heels of HBO Max’s controversial and somewhat fictionalized series, Winning Time, which is set amidst the Lakers in the ‘80s.
According to Hulu: “Ultimately, Legacy: The True Story of the LA Lakers is about family, business, and power –and how all three must be harnessed to achieve greatness.”
