“My whole brain’s a bunch of missing pieces,” Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) says in the voiceover for HBO’s True Detective season-three teaser.

Ali stars as Arkansas state police detective Wayne Hays, a man who—like Matthew McConaughey in the show’s critically acclaimed season one—is haunted by a past case. The teaser shows him at two different ages, and strikes a similar tone to the first season after what was considered a disappointing season two.

Mamie Gummer, Stephen Dorff and Carmen Ejogo also star in season three, which is directed by Daniel Sackheim.

True Detective premieres January 2019.

HBO also debuted a sizzle reel highlighting what’s coming down the line. In addition to True Detective, the network is gearing up for the return of Game of Thrones, Big Little Lies, The Deuce, Room 104, Barry, Veep and more, along with new series that include The Shop, Camping, and My Brilliant Friend.
