“I was born into this world and my first memories of it are ... pain,” says Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) in the intro to HBO’s official trailer for season 3 of Westworld.
In the trailer, a new string-pulling character (Vincent Cassel) sets up a showdown between Maeve (Thandie Newton), who makes her trailer debut in white, and Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) who spends most of her time dressed in black. It also reveals the deep alliance between the android Dolores and the human character, Caleb, played by Aaron Paul.
“They put you in a cage. Decided what your life would be. The same thing they did to me,” Dolores tells Caleb. When he asks her who they are going after, she says “the person who took your future,” before cutting to the as-yet unnamed character played by Cassel.
Delos board member Charlotte Hale (Tessa Thompson) managed to escape the destruction of season two and now is looking to contain the new android threat to the real world, while Ed Harris returns as William, who now finds himself at the end of the game he has long played. Meanwhile, Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) appears to have remained in what is now Westworld’s burned-out remnant.
Finally, sharp-eyed fans will detect Lena Waithe and Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch behind Paul in one quick shot.
The spot is beautifully scored by composer Ramin Djawadi, flowing in and out of the Westworld theme and into an orchestral rendition of Guns ‘N Roses’ “Sweet Child of Mine.”
“The real gods are coming,” says Dolores. “And they are very angry.”
Westworld returns after a two-year hiatus on March 15.
