“Is she dead?”

“What?”

“That’s what you asked the officers in the car that brought you here. Is she dead?”

So opens HBO’s latest promo, “Secrets,” for The Night Of miniseries set to premiere on July 10 at 9 p.m.

The cryptic new show delves into the intricate story of a fictitious murder case in New York City, following the police investigation and legal proceedings, all the while examining the criminal justice system and the purgatory of Rikers Island, where the accused awaits his trial.

From creators Steven Zaillian (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) and Richard Price, the eight-part limited series stars John Turturro and Riz Ahmed.

The show was originally a passion project of the late James Gandolfini, greenlit in 2013 with the title Criminal Justice and loosely inspired by the 2008 BBC series of the same name. The 2013 project was set to feature Gandolfini as a jailhouse attorney who meets Naz, an American-born Pakistani with no memory of his accused crime of stabbing a young woman to death.

It is executive produced by Zaillian, Price, Jane Tranter, James Gandolfini, and Peter Moffat and co-executive produced by Garrett Basch, Nancy Sanders and Mark Armstrong.
