The Flash followed up weeks of good reviews by sprinting out of the starting block with stellar Nielsen numbers for The CW on Tuesday, handing the network its best premiere ratings in five years.

Nearly 4.8 million viewers tuned in for the series debut, delivering a 1.9/6 rating in adults 18-49, according to Nielsen’s national live plus same day ratings. Those are The CW’s best numbers since The Vampire Diaries first aired in 2009.

The Flash was also the network’s third most-watched and third highest-rated series premiere ever for adults 18-49, behind only The Vampire Diaries and 90210.

Overall, the series premiere landed a second-place finish in its 8pm ET/PT time-slot on Tuesday night, behind NBC. In fact, the show gave the network it’s best performance on Tuesday at 8pm since the series finale of The Gilmore Girls seven years ago.

The series served as a lead-in for the tenth season of Supernatural, and the two shows combined gave The CW its most-watched Tuesday night in more than six years, with 3.66 million viewers.

The Flash is one of the cornerstones of The CW’s fall marketing push, with the network crafting a feature film-style campaign to launch the series.
