Just as Prime Video’s Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has wrapped its first season, Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring – the first movie in the epic Tolkien trilogy – is being released as a multimedia NFT (non-fungible token). The Web3 movie experience is available for preview and will be open for purchase on October 21.

The Web3 entertainment offering comes from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment in partnership with content blockchain company Eluvio and is available in two editions: Mystery and Epic. The multimedia NFT allows fans to interact with the extended edition of the film in multiple ways, including watching it in 4K ultra high definition, accessing more than eight hours of special features, viewing image galleries, discovering hidden augmented reality collectibles, and exploring themed navigation menus set in locations from the film, including the Elven capital of Rivendell, the Shire and the shadow-infested Mines of Moria. Once the experience is owned, it can be traded in the community marketplace.

The Mystery Edition offers one surprise interactive location, while the Epic Edition includes all three locations plus additional image galleries. And because all of the experience is on the blockchain, content experiences can evolve over time.

“Fans of The Lord of the Rings can now acquire, participate, and trade in an epic living media experience that will undoubtedly surprise and delight them,” said Michelle Munson, CEO and co-founder of Eluvio, in a statement. “It’s truly designed for a mass consumer audience, not just Web3 enthusiasts, which is why it should, and does, feel so remarkable and engaging. At the same time, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is setting a new bar for innovation in the distribution of home movies by demonstrating the potential of Web3 for consumer engagement, digital supply chain transformation, and new business opportunities.”

A limited quantity of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings extended edition NFT will be made available while supplies last and will be available for purchase by credit card or crypto currency. The Mystery Edition is available for $30, while the Epic Edition is available for $100.
