Netflix’s The Crown and Apple TV Plus’ Ted Lasso were named best drama and best comedy at the 73rd annual Primetime Emmys, while Netflix’s Queen’s Gambit upset HBO’s Mare of Easttown for outstanding limited series, giving Netflix two of three of the major wins and streamers all three.

Overall, Netflix led the field with 44 total wins, more than doubling the number of wins by HBO/HBO Max with 19.

The Crown finally took the crown in its fourth season, which began telling the tortured story of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. It was a sweep for the historical drama with Oscar winner Olivia Colman and Josh O’Connor winning best lead actress and actor for their portrayals of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles, while Gillian Anderson won for playing Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and Tobias Menzies for playing Prince Phillip. Peter Morgan also won for writing, and Jessica Hobbs for directing.

Ted Lasso was named outstanding comedy series although HBO Max’s Hacks gave the show an unexpected run for its money with wins for writing and directing and for lead actress Jean Smart, who also was nominated best supporting actress for Mare of Easttown. Show creator and star Jason Sudeikis won for lead actor in a comedy and was joined by Hannah Waddingham and Brett Goldstein, who won supporting actor Emmys.

Limited-series wins were split across several shows, with Queen’s Gambit also winning best director for Scott Frank. Michaela Coel, creator and star of HBO’s I May Destroy You, took the win for writing. Kate Winslet, Julianne Nicholson and Evan Peters were named lead and supporting actor and actress awards for Mare of Easttown.

HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver won its sixth straight Emmy for outstanding variety talk show while NBC’s Saturday Night Live won for outstanding variety or sketch show.

VH1’s RuPaul’s Drag Race won its fourth Emmy for best reality competition series with RuPaul breaking the record for most wins by a person of color with 11. RuPaul also was named outstanding reality show host for the sixth straight year last weekend at the Creative Arts Emmys.
