Netflix launched a featurette (posted above) and thematic trailer for The Crown that explores John Lithgow’s role as Winston Churchill, and examines Queen Elizabeth’s relationship with the British prime minister.

“Churchill is gigantic in history,” Lithgow says in the featurette. “He’s beloved. He’s got this kaleidoscope of qualities. He almost embodies what’s left of the British empire … so I was thrilled and terrified when I was offered the role.”

Makeup and costuming tricks like have helped Lithgow transform into character, to the point where he has almost contorted himself into Churchill’s slightly slumped shape

“I think I’m true to his spirit,” Lithgow says. “I know I’m not going to duplicate him. There is no one like Winston Churchill. I just have to make it real.”

To that end, Netflix’s thematic trailer “2 Courts” focuses on the aging leader as political enemies want him out, and his relationship with Queen Elizabeth II (Claire Foy), who must decide where her loyalties lie.

“Many have questioned whether I still have something to offer,” Churchill says in the trailer. “Which is to leave in place a sovereign equipped for her duty.”

Queen Elizabeth II (Claire Foy) in Netflix’s latest featurette for the upcoming series.

The Crown is inspired by Queen Elizabeth’s reign as she takes the throne at the age of 25, just after her wedding as the declining British Empire is recovering from war in the second half of the 20th century.

The series premieres November 4 on Netflix.
