In an effort to keep up with the constant barrage of new technology and mobile options its viewers are using, Telemundo is launching a newscast created entirely from those very same mobile devices.

The “Digital Day” edition of Noticiero Telemundo will air its first broadcast on Monday, July 6 at 6:30 p.m. Anchors and journalists will be armed with smartphones and tablets in order to report the news, and the newscast itself will be streamed via Periscope.

Telemundo is the first national network to produce a newscast of this kind. NBC’s Spanish-language network hopes that including mobile devices will add a personal and interactive element to the newscast to which viewers can relate.

“We are changing the way news is made by embracing all aspects of digital technology,” said Luis Carlos Velez, Telemundo’s EVP of network news. “Smartphones and tablets have become increasingly popular ways to get informed. We want to maximize their utilization by adding to our groundbreaking storytelling.”

Telemundo also plans on a heavy social play that evening, centering the conversation at #NoticieroDigital, posting behind-the-scenes footage and shots of the show’s reporters on Instagram, Twitter and Perisciope.

Noticiero Telemundo has experimented with technology-embedded newscasts before, previously launching “The Selfie Interview” segment as well as “Mi Lente,” a report that was entirely recorded on portable cameras onsite.

Noticiero Telemundo is anchored by María Celeste Arrarás and José Díaz-Balart every weekday at 6:30 p.m.
