From suggestion to explicit action, Hollywood in the 1930s wasn’t the twin bed suppression some might remember it being. Before the Production Code, Hollywood films were as sexual as ever, as “films allowed for extraordinary frankness, including nudity, adultery, premarital sex and prostitution,” according to Turner Classic Movies (TCM).

And in honor of that frankness, TCM programmed its Friday Night Spotlight for the month of September around the Pre-Code days, when actors like Mae West and Barbara Stanwyck could do more than just bat their eyes.
