Fox announced at its upfront presentation this week that the upcoming season of American Idol would be its last, a not-so-surprising, but still sad goodbye for the show that has been a mainstay in the competition format for years.

Since American Idol started churning out stars, the network’s job was to boast of those stars. Much of the show’s marketing was about shining an extra spotlight on those names.

Each season, the list got longer: Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jordin Sparks, Phillip Phillips. The list of talented stars also goes way beyond the list of season winners. Some of those finalists went on to star in TV shows and movies or put out bestselling albums.

Sometimes, that list of stars counts the judges themselves, with a list that has included everyone from Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick, Jr. to Steven Tyler and Paula Abdul.

So as we prepare to say farewell to a juggernaut in the reality show format, let’s look back at just a few recent seasons of American Idol promotion:
