FX fan favorites Justified and The Americans are almost back on the air, and we’re celebrating Throwback Thursday here at Brief with a look at some of the earliest on-air spots that convinced viewers to tune in in the first place.

Justified, which chronicles the exploits of U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens in his Kentucky hometown, kicks off its sixth and final season on FX on January 20.

The earliest spots (above) from FX highlighted the Givens’ anger, violence, and renegade nature. The copy: “Raylan Givens has a past…. he’d like to leave behind. Harlan, Kentucky has a problem… they need to solve. This spring… law is coming home. They’ll be waiting.”

Season three saw our hero getting back in action:

Season four’s promos took on the air of an outdoor revival:

Season five served up a lot of rascal:

Over on The Americans’ side of the ledger, FX kicked off its promo push for the series three seasons ago by emphasizing the enemies-in-our-midst angle—along with a big serving of 1980s realness:

Season two saw the ‘80s vibe amped up even louder, with Sting’s “Russians” playing over a teaser that was very reminiscent of his 1985 video for the song. The spot climaxes with the lyric “I hope the Russians love their children, too.”

Season three of The Americans premieres January 28 on FX.
