On Wednesday, May 20, CBS aired David Letterman’s last episode of the Late Show.
For weeks, guests, friends and fellow late-night hosts have said goodbye and paid tribute in their own ways, but before Brief says its final farewell, let’s all take another look at Letterman’s late-night debut and some big moments along the away.
1993: Letterman begins promoting the new show with CBS’ Eye:
Bill Murray will be one of his last guests because he was also his first. On Letterman’s Late Night on NBC back in 1982, Murray was his first guest providing silly stunt work then as well.
Letterman’s Top Ten list made his show stand out, giving it a standard bit that audiences became familiar with.
On his first-ever Top Ten, Letterman presents 10 Ways the New Show Will Be Better:
He’s attracted viewers and gained people’s trusts, able to play on the tradition of the show in order to update it for the ‘90s:
On Sept. 11, 2001, Letterman also brought his viewers together in a touching and eloquent speech about the events in New York.
He and Oprah even surprised Super Bowl fans everywhere when they appeared together in an ad called “Super Bowl Of Love:”
The two even followed up their appearance in an ad with Jay Leno:
