Disney’s hit animated film, Tangled, is in production to become an animated series to launch on Disney Channel worldwide in 2017, said Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer of Disney Channels Worldwide on Wednesday.
Stars Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi will reprise their roles as Rapunzel and Eugene (also known as Flynn Rider). The production also reteams Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken with lyricist Glenn Slater. Enchanted’s Chris Sonnenberg and The Lego Movie’s Shane Prigmore will executive produce.
“The genius of the original movie was its seamless blending of cinematic adventure, character-driven comedy and touching emotion,” said Marsh in a statement. “And we are fortunate to have several of the creative talent from that movie on board with this new production. With the addition of Chris and Shane as Executive Producers, we have the perfect team in place to create a series worthy of the original film.”
The series will be set between the events of the feature film and the start of the 2012 Disney Channel short, Tangled Ever After, and will feature Rapunzel as she goes out to see world before her marriage to Eugene. Eugene accompanies her on her travels as well as her chameleon sidekick, Pascal; Eugene’s horse, Maximus; the Snuggly Duckling Pub Thugs and handmaiden Cassandra, who becomes Rapunzel’s new friend and confidant.
