Syfy’s Van Helsing takes a twist on an old tale, setting the show in a post-apocalyptic future in which vampires have taken over.

“Lots, and lots of vampires, yeah. Lots,” says Trezzo Mahoro who plays Mohamad.

In its latest promo, the Van Helsing cast gives insight into Syfy’s new show, and what you should expect from season one.

‘There are major environmental problems, which trigger huge catastrophes,” explains Rukiya Bernard, who plays Doc on the show.

“There are a couple of volcanoes, one a super-volcano in Yellowstone Park, which obliterates a lot of the western states,” said Van Helsing writer Neil Labute.

“And because of these catastrophes, the underworld of vampires are able to crawl to the surface,” continues Bernard.

Van Helsing is centered on a mystery woman, Vanessa Van Helsing, who has been in a coma.

“Vanessa wakes up from this coma that she’s been in for five years, and has to slowly piece together where she is, what’s happened. So in some ways it’s like she’s reborn into a whole new world and a whole new circumstance,” says Kelly Overton, who stars as Vanessa Van Helsing.

“She’s someone who, only after this apocalyptic event, beings to find out who she really is and what she’s really capable of,” says Labute.

“This show is different than any other vampire shows I’ve seen, and I’ve been a vampire show fan ever since I was a kid,” says Overton.

The cast also delves into the types of vampires in Van Helsing and the culture that has developed among survivors in this post-apocalyptic world.

Van Helsing premieres on Syfy September 23 at 10/9 central.
