Mobile gamers can now explore the Upside Down in 8-bit-style graphics in Netflix’s new Stranger Things retro video game app.
A throwback to an ‘80s arcade, Stranger Things: The Game was developed by Texas studio BonusXP ahead of the show’s October 27 season two premiere on Netflix.
The adventure puzzle game features characters from the popular series as they explore the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana. Players can use characters’ unique abilities to navigate through levels. For instance, Lucas can nail things from afar with his Wrist Rocket and Nancy has a whole bag of bats to swing.
With clear callbacks to classics like The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Double Dragon, gamers start off as Chief Hopper as he punches his way through Hawkins Lab searching for Will, and then bleep and blop their way through scenes from the show’s first season, such as government agents chasing Mike on his bike, and Nancy hacking her way through Mirkwood Forest.
The game offers two modes, Netflix says:
“Born after 1984? You might want to start with Normal difficulty, which lets you explore at your own pace. Death isn’t even that bad. However, if you’ve honed your skills on the unforgiving games of yesteryear, then Classic is the soul-crushing mode for you.”
In addition to side missions, players are tasked with collecting pixelated Eggo waffles and gnomes.
“Who knows what secret characters or exclusive, never-before-seen-footage of season two they might unlock…” according to Netflix.
Stranger Things: The Game is available to download for free for iOS and Android devices.
