Starz’ growing cadre of premium offerings got more “obsessable” on Friday with the news that the subscription video service will be launching The Rook, a supernatural thriller co-executive-produced by Twilight maestro Stephenie Meyer. A partnership between Starz’ parent company Lionsgate and international media giant Liberty Global, the forthcoming show will also air across Liberty Global platforms in Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean.

“This is an exciting addition to our programming slate…a high-end series aimed right at the sweet spot of our audience,” said Starz president and CEO Chris Albrecht, who made the announcement at the Television Critics Association summer press tour.

With the female-led time travel show Outlander returning on September 10, season two of The Girlfriend Experience coming this fall, and the sisterly tale Howard’s End debuting in 2018, Starz has cultivated a viewership primed for The Rook, whose main character could prove to be “one of the most fascinating and thrilling female protagonists on television.” Stephen Garrett, who most recently served as executive producer on The Night Manager, will be the production’s showrunning executive producer.

Adapted from a book by Australian author Daniel O’Malley, The Rook follows the administrator of a clandestine governmental organization tasked with protecting the U.K. from supernatural threats, who may have special powers of her own. With script adaptation by screenwriters Sam Holcroft and Al Muriel, it’s hard to tell what involvement Meyer will have with the writing of the show, but with more than 100 million book sales under her belt, her knack for guiding a story that sells is proven.

“Stephenie is one of the world’s great creative talents, and Stephen [Garrett] has an incredible track record in bringing remarkable stories to the screen,” said Lionsgate Television Group Chairman Kevin Beggs and President of Worldwide Television & Digital Distribution Jim Packer, in a statement. “The Rook is a major premium property driven by an amazing creative team, and it’s not only a terrific addition to the Starz platform but the perfect series to launch a content alliance with our friends at Liberty Global.”
