“It isn’t a homecoming until someone calls you a puta,” in Starz’s upcoming original series Vida.

The half-hour drama focuses on two Mexican-American sisters, Emma (Mishel Prada) and Lyn (Melissa Barrera), from the Eastside of Los Angeles who couldn’t be more different or distanced from each other. Circumstances force them to return to their old neighborhood, where they are confronted by the past and surprising truth about their mother’s identity.

Tanya Saracho (How to Get Away With Murder, Looking, Girls), who serves as executive producer and showrunner, told reporters at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour that the show delivers a “female, brown queer perspective” that’s often missing in television.

Queer women make up half the writers room, she said, adding that there’s “a cultural shorthand that happens,” when Latinex get together to tell their own stories.

Vida premieres May 6 on Starz.
