Matthew Rhys plays a sinister stepfather having a questionable relationship with his stepdaughter, Beth (Ann Skelly) in Starz’ three-part limited series, Death and Nightingales, based on Eugene McCabe’s Irish classic set in Fermanagh, Northern Ireland in 1885.

The series focuses on a critical 24-hour period when Beth decides to leave her home with her violent stepfather and join her lover Liam Ward (Jamie Dornan). All of the neighbors’ eyes are on them, however, making escaping that much more difficult.

Allan Cubitt writes, directs and executive produces the series. Jonathan Cavendish, Tommy Bulfin, James Mitchell and Phil Robertson also executive produce.

Death and Nightingales premieres Sunday, May 16 at 10 p.m. ET/PT, following the premiere of Starz’ new series, Run the World, and the finale of true-crime series Confronting a Serial Killer.
