To help audiences better understand racial inequality and injustice, Starz has created a collection of programming that amplifies Black voices and made it available without a subscription across its platforms, including its app.
Included in the collection are:
America to Me – Filmmaker Steve James (Hoop Dreams, Life Itself) examines racial, economic and class issues at Oak Park and River Forest High School outside of Chicago, Ill., in this multipart unscripted documentary. “Everything is made for white kids because this school was made for white kids because this country was made for white kids,” says one student in the trailer.
A Huey P. Newton Story —In this Starz original production directed by Spike Lee, Huey P. Newton, co-founder of the Black Panther Party, tells the story of his life in this one-man show.
Emanuel – After a 21-year-old white supremacist opened fire in Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, nine African Americans lay dead, leaving their families and the nation to grapple with this senseless act of terror. Featuring intimate interviews with survivors and family members, Emanuel comes from executive producers Stephen Curry and Viola Davis. It’s a poignant story of justice and faith, love and hate, amd examining the healing power of forgiveness.
For Ahkeem – This documentary follows Daje Shelton, a 17-year-old Black girl from North St. Louis, as she strives to graduate from the nation’s only court-supervised public high school. Daje fights for her future as friends are killed, her 17-year-old boyfriend is pulled into the prison system, and nearby Ferguson erupts after the police shooting of Michael Brown.
Out of Omaha – An intimate portrait from executive producer J. Cole of twin brothers Darcell and Darrell Trotter, Out of Ohama is the story of two young black men coming of age in racially and economically-divided Omaha, Nebraska.
Scandalize My Name – Narrated by Morgan Freeman, this documentary examines several prominent African-American performers in the American film and television industries during the 1950s Communist witch-hunting McCarthy era.
Stranger Fruit – This film, told from the perspective of the Brown family, examines what really happened on August 9, 2014 in Ferguson, Missouri, when officer Darren Wilson killed 18-year-old Michael Brown.
The Rape of Recy Taylor – In Alabama in 1944, Recy Taylor was gang-raped by six white boys. Still, she rose up to speak and fight for justice with help from the likes of Rosa Parks and countless other women.
