Get ready for another TV reboot - this one is out of this world.
CBS and Producer Alex Kurtzman are developing a Star Trek reboot set to premiere in January 2017, the network announced Monday.
Kurtzman co-wrote and produced the 2009 Star Trek film and its sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness, in 2013. He was chosen because he “knows this world and its audience intimately,” said David Stapf, president of CBS Television Studios, in a statement.
The series will make its debut on CBS, with subsequent episodes to drop on its subscription service CBS All Access, making it the first series to debut on a broadcast network but live on its digital platform.
CBS plans to take advantage of Star Trek’s digital-savvy fan base, promoting both the new show and CBS All Access together to lure more TV fans to the service.
“This new series will premiere to the national CBS audience, then boldly go where no first-run Star Trek series has gone before – directly to its millions of fans through CBS All Access,” said Marc DeBevoise, EVP and GM of CBS Digital Media in a statement. “We’ve experienced terrific growth for CBS All Access, expanding the service across affiliates and devices in a very short time. We now have an incredible opportunity to accelerate this growth with the iconic Star Trek, and its devoted and passionate fan base, as our first original series.”
The Star Trek reboot will debut just after the original series’ 50th anniversary.
The reboot pickup comes on the heels of news that Fox is also rebooting the 1981 series Greatest American Hero, coming to the network from Last Man on Earth’s Phil Lord & Chris Miller along with Dope writer-director Rick Famuyiwa.
