“SNL” loses three cast members this week - three newcomers have been fired and one veteran is leaving for a sitcom debuting this fall.

First, Brooks Whelan, who was added to the cast last year along with a large incoming class including Beck Bennett, John Milhiser, Kyle Mooney, Mike O’Brien and Noël Wells, first broke the news on Twitter Monday:

We also learned Wednesday that two more cast members got the axe: John Milhiser and Noël Wells will not be returning to the show’s upcoming 40th season. Nasim Pedrad confirmed plans to leave the show after five seasons in order to join former “SNL” writer John Mulaney’s self-titled sitcom on Fox, executive produced by “SNL” boss Lorne Michaels. NBC has yet to announce the fate of the remaining new cast members.

Brief Take: “SNL” added a whopping six new cast members to the show last fall, not even counting Sasheer Zamata, who arrived in January. The sheer number of players on cast might have made it difficult for comedians to stand out, but the show is trimming back now as it enters its landmark 40th season on air.
